[Vox Gathering]

[Halloween Party Donations]
A huge thanks to all who signed up to donate supplies for the East Side Halloween party on the 31st. We are deeply appreciative of your generosity. Depending on what you signed up to bring, you can either drop it off at one of two places: Space12 (3121 East 12th Street) or Vox Gatherings (5619 Airport Blvd). If you signed up to bring hamburgers or hotdogs, please bring them to Space12, so we can put them directly into the freezer. All other items, bring them to whichever location that's most convenient for you. If you have any questions, feel free to contact 297collective@voxveniae.com
[FFH Training]
The week of Nov. 16th, our Mid Town and South Central Neighborhoods will be volunteering to bring meals and be overnight hosts for Foundation for the Homeless' shelter program. There is a volunteer training on Sunday Nov. 2nd @ 12:45 (or whenever Vox gets out) at Central Presbyterian, which is the church facility we will be partnering with. Anyone who is interested in volunteering with FFH in the future is invited to come to this training. A light lunch will be provided. Contact Emily if you are interested. ecox@foundationhomeless.org
[Vox Retreat]
Contrary to the customary purpose of a retreat, which tends to be inward oriented and self benefitting, our purpose of getting away is to hear from God how we can better serve our city in Jesus' name, and pray for the courage to act upon it. In some senses is an anti-retreat. Come getaway with us for a few days, so that we can better be the church in Austin and the rest of the world.
Please clear January 16-18th on your calendars! There are limited spots, so please bring your check books if you can!
Early Registration Cost: $99 College Students and $125 Post Grads (must register by Nov 30th).
Regular Registration Cost: $119 College Students and $150 Post Grads.
[Tutoring]
We are going to start a tutoring program in partnership with one of our teachers in the Vox community. On Mondays and Wednesdays from 3-4:30pm, we need people to come and read and give math and science help to 3rd graders (which means you probably can do it!) If you can come to one or both of the days, please let us know! The school is about 7 minutes from downtown. We can arrange a carpool is needed. To gear up for the winter months ahead, we have some friends that have requested blankets, jackets, socks, and warm weather clothing. We are setting up a bin in the lobby to gather donations starting this Sunday. Looking for more Large to XL sizes for the clothes. Clothes can be new or used.

This Wednesday night at 8pm, Space12 will be showing the Presidential Debates with a dessert potluck. We are inviting the eastside community as well. Please bring a dessert to share!

Last year, a few houses on the East Side decided to put together a Halloween party for the neighborhood. Along with food and candy, we got to meet a lot of our neighbors and build some really good relationships with the community. This year, we want to do it again, but wanted to see if anybody would like to partner with us through helping volunteer to donate some supplies for the party. We've got a couple sign up sheet coming around, and if there's something on the list you would be able to help donate, it would be greatly appreciated.

[Vox Ball]

Basically, a geographic area assigned to a particular church. Various church traditions have used the parish system to ensure every area is served by a church. It's usually thought of as a medieval and/or Catholic and/or strange Louisiana thing. It's also often associated with the concept of 'a parish priest', a kind of lonely messiah who only talks to people twice his age and occasionally helps McCauley Caulkin get home safe on Christmas Eve.
In reality, the earliest churches planted by Paul and co. appeared to assign themselves parishes; in addition, throughout much of history a church's responsibility to a parish usually went far beyond the work done by one priest. For example, up until the modern era, most Anglican and Catholic parish churches still included at least an official parish nurse, a school, the equivalent of a 'neighborhood association', and numerous opportunities for the community to learn and practice music and visual arts. In fact, much earlier on, when the early Greek and Roman churches started dividing and assigning church groups to parishes, they did so much effective work for their communities they gradually replaced/morphed into the official local civil government [ok, probably don't want to go any further with that, unless we've got our eyes set on the Travis county sheriff's office or something].
The original term for parish comes from the Greek words meaning 'beside-house'. So, historical tradition aside, when we say Vox has a parish, we mean:
1) literally the area beside our house
2) is the responsibility of our group of believers
One quote off the internet is straightforward, but somehow a nice change of pace from our consumer/consumption Christianity:
"Choosing a church should be a no-brainer. We are divided by location into "parishes." Where you live determines where you go to church. In some ways, no further choice should be necessary. Catholic churches are remarkably similar one to another—in every parish throughout the world, the same Scripture is read, the same feast days celebrated, the same doctrines (for the most part) upheld."

[Need Tutors]
Our partner, Austin Partners in Education (APIE), needs just 2 more volunteers for a tutoring program to happen at Oak Springs Elementary School. APIE partners with teachers in classroom to provide in-class mentoring and tutoring for students during their class hour. The scheduled time is on Wed from 1:45-2:35pm for math class. [Living Water International]
Leslie Harrington , who is part of the Vox Community, is starting an Austin Chapter of the Organization Living Water International. Their main goal is to bring awareness to the Austin community and come up with creative ways to fundraise for LWI. Some fundraising ideas we plan on implementing in the future: music fundraiser (Sad Accordions, Alex Dupree, Etc...), a 5k run/walk, Art showing, and a community dinner. They are interested in having some volunteers to help.
Their first meeting will be on Oct. 2nd, 7PM on the back patio at Homeslice pizza. It's going to be very relaxed, as they really want to focus on getting to know everyone. They've also invited LWI donors in Austin to come and share their experiences with the organization.

What are Neighborhoods?
We are called to love God with our heart, soul, mind and strength. However, evaluating that life can be nebulous. Fortunately, Jesus gave us some context to living that out - if you want to know how well you love God, look at how you love your neighbor, they are one in the same. Neighborhoods are Vox's biweekly regional gatherings, anchored by food, prayer and scripture to learn what it looks like to love our neighbor. Hopefully over the course of the year, our neighborhoods will be blessed by our coming together.
